Online Creative Writing Programme (Ages 12-14) – April 23

These writing courses are conducted just twice a year – in April and in October. Each one is 12 weeks long and comprises twelve online interactions and access to a private, secure forum, where participants share work and provide feedback to one another. I provide feedback each time a participant shares work, and I encourage the children to rewrite and edit until their work reaches its best potential. In this sense, it is an intensive programme that requires participants to log in multiple times a week, write regularly and share relevant ideas and opinions on the forum.
If I have a minimum of four participants for each batch, I also organise up to three guest sessions, which are open to non-participants on payment of a registration fee, but free for those who are part of my programmes. Outline
The writing programme for ages 12 to 14 is similar in structure and overall content to the one for ages 9 to 11. The details of each module differ slightly, though, as do the activities conducted in class and the home assignments.
In the past, we’ve worked with poetry, drama, nonfiction and stories in the past. During the April 2022 edition, we created an e-zine for the first time, and it was such a rewarding experience that it will be a regular feature of my writing programmes henceforth. To create the third issue of our e-zine, here are a few things we will work on.
- Poetry – I love working on poetry at my writing programmes (take a look at this to learn why). The participants wrote several excellent poems during the last edition! Here’s just one example:
This time, we’ll work on more experimental poetry, like fractured fairy tales, unusual elegies, and rebuses. - Nonfiction – What do we feel strongly about? In issue 1 of WORDS, we wrote speeches on the subject This, I believe. This time, we’ll work on debates, query letters, and more.
- Stories – How many of us have drawers full of incomplete stories? During the fiction module, we’ll look at plotting, write mystery stories, and attempt to find our own unique voices.
