My writing courses are conducted just twice a year – from April to June and from October to December. Each course is 12 weeks long. It comprises twelve online interactions and access to a private, secure forum, where participants share work and read one another’s work. I provide feedback each time a participant submits something on the forum, and I encourage the children to rewrite and edit until their work reaches its best potential. In this sense, it is an intensive programme that requires participants to log in multiple times a week, write regularly and share relevant ideas and opinions on the forum.

Please note that this also means that the participants who sign up are interested in writing and committed to improving their craft! If you prefer to enrol for a course that requires less commitment to writing, you could consider my six-week programme Read, Write, Explore for the same age-group. This is a programme that I run right through the year!

At my writing programme, if I have a minimum of four participants for each batch, I also organise up to three guest sessions, which are open to non-participants on payment of a registration fee, but free for those who are part of my writing programmes. Take a look at the three guest sessions I organised during the previous edition of the creative writing programme:

Outline

In the past, we’ve worked with poetry, drama, memes, nonfiction and stories. During the April 2022 edition, we created an e-magazine (WORDS) for the first time, and it was such a rewarding experience that it has become a regular feature of my writing programmes. You can download all the previous issues!

As you will see, we have a range of poems, stories, plays, memes, puzzles, and more!

While the details of my writing programmes for ages 9-11 and ages 12-14 differ, the overall structure is the same. In this way, the content of the e-magazine has similar overarching themes.

To create the January 2025 issue of WORDS, here are a few things we will work on.

  • Poetry – Yes, we always begin with poetry. Read about why I love teaching poetry! During the first three weeks of the October to December 2024 edition of my writing programme, we’ll explore a few more forms of poetry–both familiar and unfamiliar. We’ll work with rhyming verse and free verse, and we’ll try to work on a challenging form of poetry too.
  • Nonfiction – Nonfiction is often associated with the word “boring” but it doesn’t have to be so! We’ll explore a range of nonfiction writing from features to opinion pieces.
  • Stories – I’ve learned from experience that what I plan for the fiction module is quite different from what I end up doing because I love to focus on what interests the participants in any given batch. This time, I would like to look at writing prompts, flash fiction and experiments with narrative voice.
