Arangetram – Sakshi and Shivona

posted on June 23, 2019

As I write this post, I look back at the number of times I've written about an Arangetram. Some are just posts sharing details of upcoming arangetrams, but others ...The emotions after - in August 2013A reflection on the idea of the Arangetram itselfWhat I felt after an Arangetram in 2014Our Arangetram anniversaryI write so frequently about the Arangetram because for us, at the Academy of Indian Dances, each Arangetram is significant for everyone. I don't know if this is true for other dance schools too, but for us, it is a moment when all of us are charged with emotion. We are excited and nervous. Even though we are not going to be on stage at all, we are all part of the experience. We are part of this moment in each dancer's life. After today's Arangetram, 49 girls from the Academy will have reached this landmark. These dancers are scattered all over the globe. Some … [Read more...]

Urja – A Classical Dance Festival

posted on February 11, 2017

Maharashtra Cultural Centre has invited the Academy of Indian Dances to perform for Urja, a classical dance festival. For this performance, we've taken an old theme, one that we presented in 2012, Naaritva: Exploring Womanhood. The performance explores the journey of a woman through traditional pieces, both classical and folk.We begin with girlhood, associated with fun and play. Young girls performing a kolattam will represent this stage of life. What is growing up without friendship and bonding? And when there's exciting gossip to share, friendship becomes even more spicy! The journey of a woman would be incomplete without friendship! And then comes love, the beautiful shringara rasa. The intimacy of young love goes with playfulness, teasing, love and longing.Next, we depict motherhood, exploring the special bond between a mother and her child.Perhaps the … [Read more...]

Arangetrams and Anniversaries

posted on October 29, 2014

My dance teacher does not remember the exact date of her Arangetram, but she does remember that it was in 1964.Just for today, I'm going to pretend to myself that her Arangetram was the 29th of October, 1964.Because today, I think of all the time that has passed since our Arangetram: my sister's and mine. It's ten years since ours. 29th October, 2004. Ten years.Ten years of learning, performing and teaching. Ten years of acquiring a blend of pride and humility. Ten years of discovering beauty and expression. Ten years of understanding our bodies better - not so much through talent of our own as because we persevered. And just for today, I will pretend that our ten years marks my teacher's fifty years. Because then I realise how much farther I can go. Ten years, then, is nothing. … [Read more...]

Arangetram – Chaitrali, Diaspina and Purvi

posted on August 11, 2014

"How was the Arangetram? How did Chaitrali do?" my mother asked.I had one word in response, "Moving."And it was moving for more reasons than one. When Chaitrali, despite her hearing and speaking disability made her speech, many of us were in tears. "I thank the didis," she said, painstakingly. "Varsha didi ... Nisha didi ... Resham didi ..." I pursed my lips to hold back the tears. When she finished her solo, many of us were crying again. Those of us who have our five senses intact should be ashamed of erring on stage when she managed. Somehow, she managed. Sure, she looked at us for confirmation that she was doing it right. She wanted us to be there to support her. But what's so strange about that? But equally, I was moved by Diya and Purvi. How did Chaitrali do? What time is Chaitrali's Arangetram? Diya and Purvi did not have the right to make mistakes because they were doubly … [Read more...]

Arangetram

posted on August 10, 2014

The Academy of Indian Dances welcomes you to the Arangetram of Chaitrali, Diya and Purvi.Chaitrali is a special girl with a hearing disability despite which she has persevered and come to this stage. Her Arangetram is a proud moment for her parents, her guru, and somehow by extension, all of us. Diya and Purvi - hats off to them for their cooperation and support. Things have been different for them because they have the overwhelming responsibility of being better than ever and making no mistakes at all. This Arangetram is certainly going to be memorable.Venue: Tilak Smarak Mandir Date: 10th August, 2014 Time: 5:30 pm … [Read more...]

Arangetram

posted on April 7, 2014

Often, invitation cards say that 'Arangetram' means 'ascending the stage'. Theoretically, all of us know that it is our first stage programme. Then why is it supposed to be so perfect? It is a beginning, an entrance. We often widen our eyes and raise our eyebrows at students who perform their Arangetram 'too early'. At age seven? How ridiculous! After learning dance for just two years? Tut tut. Nonsense.Where do these ideas come from?A book I'm reading tells me about many of the last devadasis. Kumbakonam Bhanumathi (who described dance as 'the sweeter unheard melody of our music system') did her Arangetram at age eleven. Pandanallur Jayalakshmi (whom Rukmini Devi allegedly tried unsuccessfully to imitate) completed hers when she was eight. Thanjavur Balasaraswathi (about whom Satyajit Ray made a film) was seven when she did hers. These are just examples. The … [Read more...]

The Emotions after . . .

posted on August 31, 2013

I've lost track of the number of Arangetrams I've watched from the wings. But the mood of one that is well done is always the same. When I can feel what the dancer feels, I think it's perhaps even more intense than a wedding day, except that I have no notion of how that feels. On the day of anyone's Arangetram, I feel humility. I feel, "Can I do that? Can I do that as well as she does it?"On the day of an Arangetram, I feel pride and joy. "This girl has actually taken that step. She has come far enough to take this step. She has actually achieved this."On the day of an Arangetram, I feel fear. "Will she live up to her own expectations? And that niggling voice - what does my teacher think of the way she's doing it?"On the day of an Arangtram, I feel awe. "This is a beginning. A grand and glorious beginning of a girl's new life."What a day it always is. Sometimes, I think watching … [Read more...]
