White Socks Only

posted on December 14, 2021

White Socks Only is a stunning piece of literature and art, a charming book about a curious child eager to find out whether something she's heard is true. I revisited this book purely for the purpose of teaching it, and there's just so much to explore! Of course, the obvious choices would be to visit the themes of racism and segregation. But as a creative writing trainer, there's much more. The book opens with the young narrator wanting a story, and not just any story, her favourite story. And she knows just how to get her grandma to tell that story - by asking if she may go to town alone. She knows what the response will be - she may not go until she can do some good there. But she also knows that this will lead to the story of the time her grandmother sneaked out, went to town--and unwittingly did some good there.Without revealing why her grandmother went to town and what … [Read more...]

November Reads

posted on November 29, 2021

Generally speaking, I read so little literature in translation! Just by chance, however, this month, I've read three books in translation. One was adapted from several Russian editions, one translated from German, and one translated from Swedish. Each is for a different age-group, and each one was enjoyable in its own special way. Here are a few quick reviews. Little Girls Are Wiser Than Men I've never owned a collectible book before, and this one is such a treat. Illustrated with linocut art by Lebanese printmaker Hassan Zahreddine, printed on handmade paper, using a vintage 1965 Heidelberg letterpress, translated from Russian by an Indian ... I love how global the book is! And apart from all the elements that make the physical book special, the story is lovely. I hadn't read the original tale in any form, but I enjoyed reading this one. As I work … [Read more...]

Uncle Oscar’s Chairs From A to Z

posted on October 6, 2021

It's sometimes amazing how a book comes into your world at just the right time. A dear friend whom I don't talk to often enough sent me Uncle Oscar's Chairs: From A to Z out of the blue. I had not heard of it, but a book is always an exciting gift, right? Plus, she picked up the book at Storyteller, one of the lovely independent bookstores that supply books for my book clubs. And the book was perfect in so many ways. For one, it's unusual. It's a book about chairs. Real chairs. A is for Ant designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1952B is for Ball designed by Eero Aarnio in 1963C is for Coconut designed by George Nelson in 1955You get the picture. So it's an alphabet book, but also an introduction to all sorts of chairs, some of which are familiar and some so zany that they surprise a laugh out of you. I loved it!But the reason I call it a perfect book at this time is that my online … [Read more...]

Once Upon an Alphabet

posted on April 3, 2021

Stories are made of words and words are made of the alphabet. What if there was a special story for each letter of the alphabet? That's the premise of this zany, wonderful book, Once Upon an Alphabet, by Oliver Jeffers. My father bought the book for me some three years ago, or so I understand. And he forgot to give it to me. My mother and my sister just assumed that I had seen it and left it there because I'm not a hoarder, because I didn't want to take it right away, because ... because. But the truth is that I didn't know of its existence until last week, when I brought it home and devoured it.What a fun, grand book it is! I gasped at the genius of it, chortled at the fun and rolled my eyes at the silliness. And I loved every page. This kind of writing comes from brilliance that's at an altogether different level.A is for astronaut, for instance. But Edmund, who wants to be … [Read more...]

Today I Am … A Writer!

posted on August 28, 2018

The worst thing about being a writer is not writer's block. Not by a long stretch. The worst thing is all the waiting.Waiting for people to respond. Waiting for a book to be ready. Waiting for a book to hit the market. Every time I get an email - even a rejection - there is a little Varsha inside me that celebrates, simply because the waiting period is over. That's why this week has been particularly incredible. So incredible that I don't know what to write about first. So, not in any order of importance, here goes.I was shortlisted for the Scholastic Asian Book Award once more. In 2016, a collection of my short stories was shortlisted, and it will be published by Scholastic Asia later this year. This time, a novel titled Red Eyes is on the list!Mango Books published my book, The Prophecy of Rasphora, and you can now buy it easily at the Mango Books e-store or … [Read more...]
