Mercy Watson to the Rescue

posted on March 5, 2026

Three years ago, we read Because of Winn-Dixie at my book club, and we loved it. I've been mulling over Mercy Watson since even before that. It's shorter than most of the other books we read at my book club. Would it be challenging enough? Or too childish? Finally, I decided I would give it a shot next month. Shorter books give us the time to do more activities! Plus, especially as most of my book clubbers have not encountered Kate DiCamillo's work, what better place to introduce a wonderful writer to them? Pig or Dog? The best thing about using a well known book at my book club is the range of resources I can find online! Before we read the book, we will discuss what my book clubbers think will happen in the story, based on what they see on the cover. And then, we'll have a debate--pig or dog? Which makes for a better pet and why? Let's try to … [Read more...]

Beverly, Right Here

posted on July 17, 2025

I never came across Kate DiCamillo’s work as a child. I haven’t read so many of her more famous books—not The Tale of Desperaux or Mercy Watson or any of those. I did read Because of Winn-Dixie with my book club, though, and we loved it!And now, I read Beverly, Right Here, another book that aches with tenderness and vulnerability. It takes a while to get into the story because Beverly, at the beginning, isn’t a likeable character. Life has taught her to shield herself from love because things you love go away. Like her dog Buddy. The story opens with her burying Buddy and deciding that there’s nothing left for her in her town. So she gets a ride—with someone she doesn’t like—and strides off into an unknown future with no plans and no money. And Beverly, right here, begins to discover herself.Determined not to commit to anything, Beverly refuses to think about anything … [Read more...]

Because of Winn-Dixie

posted on July 4, 2023

Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn-Dixie has been on my list of books to read for a l-o-n-g time. Yet, I didn't get around to reading it until I thought of introducing it to my book club. And I'm so glad I did! It's a gorgeous book. It's the kind of book that makes your heart ache and swell with its sweetness and its gentleness.India Opal's mother left her father and her, and it's because of Winn-Dixie, a dog she adopts at the spur of the moment, that she begins to come to terms with her loss. Not just that; all thanks to Winn-Dixie, she makes friends and learns what it means to be part of a community where everyone not only has a story to share and but also has ghosts that haunt their past.I can't wait to read it with my book club! Vocabulary Playing with words is always fun! I have three vocabulary activities in mind for Because of Winn-Dixie. … [Read more...]
