The World of Butterfingers: The Halloween Adventure and Other Stories

We’ve read barely any graphic novels at my book clubs! It’s time to change that, slowly but surely.

Like I wrote when I reviewed The Halloween Adventure last year, the graphic novel format works perfectly for stories about Butterfingers. Plus, graphic novels appeal to a range of readers, making them accessible to book clubbers at various reading levels. Here’s what we’ll do as we read this set of three stories!

Examining the Cover

Choose any one of the characters on the cover and describe them. What guesses can you make about what will happen in the stories? What can you say about the expressions on their faces?

I’ll provide the children with a small framework to write about the character, their physical description, and any guesses the children have about the story.

Self Portrait

The World of Butterfingers: The Halloween Adventure and Other Stories opens with sketches–not photographs–of the author and illustrator. How easy or difficult is it to draw a picture of yourself? Let’s find out!

Comic Strips

At Read, Write, Explore, one class every two weeks is devoted to creative writing. With The Halloween Adventure and Other Stories, we will work on small comic strips, analysing the way a comic works and attempting to write narration and dialogue that fits in with this format.

Join a programme!

Read, Write, Explore is perfect for children who enjoy stories and are tentatively exploring creative writing. Unlike at my  intensive writing programme, I don’t expect children to do assignments each week. Rather, we explore a book and do a little bit of writing, focusing on getting started and dabbling in different forms of creativity. This is a programme that runs right through the year. Join the next batch!
