The Duomo in Milan

posted on May 11, 2015

Torino, the parts of it that we saw from the bus that was not a train, seemed like an interesting city, but not interesting enough for us to change our travel plans. We took from Torino a train to Milano, and we were lucky to get places together. Trains in Italy are a lot more like trains in India, in terms of the number of people. Soon after we left Torino, there were even people standing. We reached Milan and we were flooded with memories. I've written already about how we went back to the counter for instructions on how to get to the duomo, but I never described the Duomo experience. In 2006, when we visited the Duomo for the second time in our lives, we experienced the sublime. The Duomo lifted my soul and made it soar. I don't know what to say, I've written in my diary, I think part of the charm lies in the fact that even though it is magnificent, it doesn't dwarf you; it … [Read more...]

Flying Alone

posted on March 22, 2015

"Window or aisle?" "Aisle, please."I took my boarding pass and boarded the flight. No sister with me this time. No one to hold my hand. No one to exchange sparkling glances of excitement with. Sure, I was going to meet her, but on this journey in 2006, I was alone. The journey to Milan from Mumbai was a long one, but I sat straight, willing myself not to fall asleep. What if my head dropped and I leaned against the man sitting next to me? Mortifying! Better to be sleep-deprived. I was travelling alone, I reminded myself, and I had no comfortable shoulder to rest on.Chewing the inside of my cheek, I kept myself awake. I could not bring myself to eat dinner at 2 in the morning, so I drank a glass of water and stared out of the window. The world I was flying over looked like a topo map. I loved topo maps. I found myself marking settlements in my head with red dots, matching the red … [Read more...]

Backpacking through Europe

posted on March 15, 2015

That year, we went from Salzburg to Munich. We spent a few hours at Munich and then went to Berlin. And from Berlin, northward to Amsterdam. Our night in Amsterdam was another night out, but after so many journeys and so many crazy backpacking experiences, we'd figured out a few things. We had Eurail passes that we kept gushing about - we could use them.We spent the night on trains. Took a train to Utrecht, then another to Rotterdam, and then one back to Amsterdam. That's how we spent the night. We didn't see tulips or windmills. We did see Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank's house. But honestly, we were exhausted. For a long time, we just sat by a canal and did nothing. We were depressed because we thought we'd lost some money, and we were filled up with all kinds of thoughts and emotions.Fifteen days of glorious backpacking. After Salzburg, I did not write any more; I was too tired. But … [Read more...]

Map-Reading: The Crazy Travelogue Continues

posted on February 19, 2015

I invite you to examine the map above. Notice where the 'Ostello' is. It's right between the QT8 metro station and the Lotto metro station. When we got to the youth hostel the first time, it was simple enough. Sign-boards guided us from the metro-station QT8 to the hostel. On day two in Milan, we had different plans. We thought we would be a little adventurous. We were backpacking through Europe: we had to do cool, new things; we had to forge new paths! We decided to begin by getting off at Lotto, instead of QT8. No crystal clear directions here, but we had a map, which we could use. Of course. We walked enthusiastically. Then we walked some more. And we walked even further, wondering whether the hostel was equidistant from the two metro stations. We had been told to get off at QT8, so we reasoned that Lotto must be a wee bit further on. A slightly longer walk.So we … [Read more...]

The Crazy Travelogue – V

posted on February 18, 2015

Coping with a new language, staying with people I did not know and attending school with friends who were much better at French than I was was too trying an experience for me to have written about my experience every day. I wanted to write, but it was all good intentions and nothing more.On the 13th of June, 2004, though, our adventure actually began - three young Indian girls backpacking through Europe. I will never forget those two weeks. Unbelievable, educational weeks. We reached Milan at 9 in the morning and did not know where to begin. We did not speak Italian and we needed to find a youth hostel. We got off the train and walked purposefully down the platform just like all the other people with a destination. There was no other way we could go. And we reached the end of the platform. We exchanged glances, looked around, and learned out first Italian words - ufficio … [Read more...]

The Duomo

posted on April 3, 2013

'Duomo' just means 'cathedral', but the duomo in Milan is just something else. The first time we travelled in Europe, we started with Milan. That made it exciting in itself. We drank from water fountains. We ate real pizza and real pasta. We tried talking to real Italian people with real Italian accents, sometimes talking real Italian which was a bit hard. And we saw the beautiful duomo. The second time we went to Milan, we did not have any intentions of staying there. We thought we would take the first train out of Milan and go to Ancona or Bari to get our ferry to Greece. That was the plan. So we stood in the long queue at the enquiry counter of the railway station, talking excitedly about all our plans for Greece, everything we wanted to see, everything we had read, mythology...We are always sceptical of people at railway booths. They're usually grumpy. We were more than a little … [Read more...]
