When I read Hey Sis! Hey Bro! earlier this year, I had every intention of introducing it to my book club around Raksha Bandhan, and predictably, I forgot all about it. When I was looking through my lists of books, though, I decided that instead of waiting till next year, I would just bring it in now. Short stories are always fun, and the length of these particular stories makes Hey Sis! Hey Bro! a perfect book club read. Here’s what we’ll do as we read it!
Siblings
Often, children have a love-hate relationship with their siblings, something that is perfectly portrayed in this collection of short stories.
Do you have a sibling? If so, what is your relationship with them? And if not, would you like one?
We’ll do a quick activity with acrostics, writing adjectives with each letter of the words ‘BROTHER’ and ‘SISTER’. I’m waiting to see what the children come up with!
Alternative Endings
In class, we will read just three stories. We’ll pick one of these stories and attempt to create an alternative ending. “What-if” statements are a great way to get creative! Beginning with a simple what-if statement, we’ll see where a story could lead.
Writing a Short Story
At Read, Write, Explore, one class every two weeks is devoted to creative writing. With this book, we will work on a short story. We’ll look at the elements of one of the stories we read, analyse the plot graph and then write a sibling story of our own.
Read, Write, and Explore with Us!
Each batch of Read, Write, Explore has a maximum of ten participants so that I have the time to engage with every child and get to know a little about them through the books we read together. A small batch also allows me to give children individual feedback when we do writing exercises. Join us as we read three more books and (at least) three more writing exercises!
