Hey Sis! Hey Bro!

posted on February 3, 2026

It's been such a long time since I read a collection of short stories! Hey Sis! Hey Bro! by Deepa Agarwal was a fun read, bringing together a range of stories featuring brothers and sisters, or, as the subtitle says, celebrating the sibling bond. From mythology to historical fiction and realistic fiction, I enjoyed the variety of tales brought together by a common theme. Each story in the collection is just the right length, giving us a snippet of a sibling relationship. I like the nuances portrayed, the mixture of love and hate, the pettiness and grandeur of the emotions between siblings, as well as the messiness of growing up. Competitiveness and collaboration, hope and despair--all these find their way into this light-hearted, easy to read collection.TitleHey Sis! Dum Dum to the Rescue & Yet More Adventures of Little Shambu

posted on August 11, 2023

I just finished reading book 3 of the Little Shambu series, and it's just as enjoyable as the others! We meet all the familiar characters--Little Shambu and family, the dog Dum Dum, Little Shambu's neighbour Shanti, the class bully JJ--as well as several new characters with names that made me chuckle. The drama teacher, for instance, is called Miss Mithi Sharbat, but more fun are the biology teacher Professor Y. Russ and the P.E. teacher, Stan D'tease!Just like the other collections of stories, Dum Dum to the Rescue & Yet More Adventures of Little Shambu comprises believable tales of an urban boy's encounters with animals. A monkey enters Little Shambu's house, Mama Shambu keeps a fox and chickens, and JJ plays a prank that involves four tame mice. Of course, Dum Dum is part of several adventures too. At the very end of the book is a lovely little backstory showing us how … [Read more...]

In the Bear’s Den & More Adventures of Little Shambu

posted on July 30, 2023

Life is never humdrum with Little Shambu around, and I loved this next set of adventures too! I remember reading about how the non-violence policy of Shikari Shambu ensured that he never fired a single shot. In fact, he is more a forest ranger than a hunter, and these stories about Little Shambu set the stage for a Shikari Shambu who loves animals. From saving the life of a harmless snake to meeting an officer who rescues bears, these tales featuring Little Shambu are a lovely way to introduce environment activism in young children. At the same time, the stories don’t shy away from mirroring reality, whether it is in the context of an elephant at a temple in Kerala or a rattlesnake that needs to be returned to its natural habitat. I enjoyed also how gently the idea of livelihood versus animal rights was expressed through stories like “Shooting with a Bear”. But as with Strangus … [Read more...]

Dungeon Tales

posted on March 6, 2023

We read Dungeon Tales II in September last year and loved it. In fact, it was everyone's favourite read from the August-September selection, even though it competed with Paati Vs UNCLE and Frindle. So how can we not read Dungeon Tales, or, as the children at my book club call it, ungeon ales?A brilliantly crafted collection of stories, this book takes us through the creation of the tome we encounter in the second book. The Badmash Badshah is all set to make heads roll, until one young prisoner comes up with a plan - of regaling the emperor with stories. One by one, the prisoners are brought before him, and they tell him their magnificent, fantastical, hilarious tales. Word Choice Why does the author Venita Coelho use the word 'dungeon' rather than a word like 'prison' or 'jail'? How does word choice affect a story?Through a quick vocabulary activity, … [Read more...]

The Lizard of Oz and Other Stories

posted on March 3, 2023

As a child, I adored animal stories. Dick King-Smith was a favourite, and I scoured the British Library for his books. Another favourite was the Animal Ark series - completely different in the sense that the animals aren't anthropomorphic, but fun, all the same. That's one of the reasons we're reading The Lizard of Oz at my book club. Although I haven't worked with short stories with my book club for ages seven and eight before, they work excellently with the older ones, so I'm excited to read this set next month. Humour, adventure and sparkling surprises come together in this collection that I'm sure we'll have fun exploring! Word Puzzle Several years ago, the theme for the reading challenge at the British Library was 'Animal Agents'. I loved the books in the collection, as well as all the activities we did! One of those activities is a word puzzle … [Read more...]

My Year in Writing: 2022

posted on January 7, 2023

What can I say about a year when I FINALLY managed to take my books to audiences? At lit fests in Gurugram, Vadodara, Jaipur and Pune, I shared my books, interacted with children, and did school visits once more. Almost all through 2022, I was on a high! And yet, the true highlight of the year as a writer was the publication of a book I started writing in 2015, after I visited the beautiful forests of Nagzira. Red EyesRed Eyes is an environmental thriller, and it is one of the very few books I've written that was never rejected. I started writing it in 2015, but I'm what they call a pantser. I muddle about, writing what I can, letting the story take the lead. So, in the beginning, I had nothing but an assortment of tales told to us by guides we met in Nagzira and Tadoba.Guide tales? Interesting, sure, but I wanted more. So I started putting them all together in a story told … [Read more...]

Flipped – Mystery Stories and Sci-Fi Stories

posted on November 7, 2022

With Flipped - Mystery Stories and Sci-Fi Stories, we have another first at my book club - an anthology! Full disclosure - I have a story in Flipped too, but we won't be reading that one.I love the idea of the Flipped books. You read a few stories, then decide you want another kind of story, so you just flip the book over and discover another genre. Short stories work well at my book club too, so there's a lot we can do as we read this anthology. Sci-Fi Stories A couple of years ago, I invited a friend and NASA scientist, Dr Sreeja Nag, to conduct a session for my writing programme on science stories. Like every other guest session I've organised, I learned a lot from the session. What is science fiction anyway? What kinds of stories make for believable science fiction? Taking an idea from another session Sreeja conducted, we'll explore a few writing … [Read more...]

Dragonflies, Jigsaws and Seashells

posted on September 9, 2022

For the first time ever, we're going to read one of my books at my book club! I am in equal parts nervous and excited. Yes, Dragonflies, Jigsaws and Seashells was shortlisted for the Scholastic Asian Book Award. Yes, it's been published both by Scholastic Asia  and Scholastic India. Yes, it was shortlisted for the Singapore Book Award. That doesn't make me any less nervous!I chose this book of mine because reading Dungeon Tales II convinced me that short stories are perfect for Read, Write, Explore. We will read excerpts from three stories in class and do activities based on the stories, concluding the edition by writing something of our own.  Jigsaw Puzzles A book club is all about having fun, so we'll begin with an online jigsaw puzzle. I wrote the story "Jigsaw Puzzles" because I loved jigsaws as a child. Like Aniket in the story, I would make … [Read more...]

Dungeon Tales II

posted on April 11, 2022

Munni finds an old book in her Mamaji's shop. What does it say? ungeon ales? What could that possibly be? There's only one way to find out - Munni must learn how to read, and properly. There's a tiny problem - girls are forbidden to read in her village. But can that little detail stop a protagonist like Munni? Stories within a story within a story - Munni reads a book about the Badmash Badshah, who has prisoners in his dungeon come tell him stories. And these stories comprise not ungeon ales, but the Badmash Badshah's Dungeon Tales.I loved the book. Layered with powerful themes and comprising a range of stories from the heroic to the horrific, Dungeon Tales is a glorious celebration of both rebellion and storytelling. I chuckled as I read tale after tale, rejoicing in triumphs, both tiny and tremendous. And the alliterative titles used to address the Badmash Badshah! I smile even … [Read more...]

Mostly Ghostly Stories

posted on February 21, 2022

If you want to start a conversation with her, send her an email here and she promises to replyI paused and sighed. That's how Subhadra Sen Gupta's bio note ends, and even though I never knew or even met her, that line right there warms me up. And even if she cannot reply now, her words stay alive through all the wonderful books she's written.Mostly Ghostly Stories is a fun, pacy collection of six stories. The stories span across time - from one set in Vijayanagar during Krishna Deva Raya's rule to another set in the age of the internet and social media. And no, even though they are all ghost stories, they aren't horror stories. They're stories of witches with a sense of humour, ghosts with the ability to solve mysteries and grumpy spirits who insist that some rules about food cannot be broken. The title of the collection is important too: they are mostly ghostly stories. … [Read more...]
